The Land Rover Discovery 4 has won the What Car? Best 4x4 award.

Land Rover landed the victory ahead of rivals Mercedes, BMW and Lexus.

The result is one of many accolades that the Discovery 4 has collected since its release, including 4x4 Magazine's Car of the Year and Scottish Car of the Year.

Awards from overseas have also been forthcoming, with the 4x4 collecting Best 4x4 from Spain's Car and Driver publication and Best Annual SUV from Autocar China.

Steve Fowler, editor of What Car?, put the off-roader's success down to the fact that it has an ability to adapt to numerous different roles.

"Thanks to a recent comprehensive update, the Discovery is shining brighter than ever…..as well as offering executive car comfort and MPV practicality, it's still a real go-anywhere off-roader," he said.

Overall, Land Rover sales rose 45 per cent in December.
