Those interested in Mercedes car hire will be pleased to hear that the manufacturer has begun production of its highly anticipated SLS AMG.

According to Mercedes the car is "nothing short of a masterpiece", and will be an instant hit in the sports car class.

Enthusiasts have already been given the chance to see the vehicle at both the Frankfurt and Detroit motor shows.

Motorists are likely to be impressed by the car's purist design and superior handling dynamics.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "This shows that the exciting design and extraordinary concept of our gullwing model precisely meet the taste and aspirations of potential customers."

The inclusion of an advanced AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine allows owners to race from zero to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

The SLS AMG has been chosen as the front cover star for the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 game.
