New petrol engines are set to greet the Mini Cooper fleet from the spring of this year to offer motorists additional power, while also playing a greater role in supporting the environment.
Among the technical advancements will be upgrades for the iconic Mini Cooper S model, which will become the most efficient hot hatch in its class.
Nine brake horsepower more peak power will be available from a 1.6-litre unit, with a top speed of 142 miles per hour able to be reached and acceleration from still to 62 miles per hour taking seven seconds.
Carbon dioxide generation has been improved to 136g/km, while motorists can complete 48.7 miles to the gallon on the combined cycle.
A first-time inclusion of a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct petrol injection and fully variable valve control are thought to have aided these figures.
Jochen Goller, director of Mini UK, said: "Mini is introducing this array of new technology and features for the new decade.
"Once again, our dedication to continuous improvement will bring substantial benefits in both efficiency and performance to our customers."
He added that Mini fans will have to pay no extra for the developments, when the latest vehicles go on sale in March this year.
Safety is also at the forefront of the Mini Cooper S, with the standard equipment featured including Brake Assist, Automatic Stability Control and Traction and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
