Readers of a German language automobile enthusiast magazine have honoured the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and SLS AMG luxury cars with accolades.

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class was declared the best saloon in the luxury class after a vote by Auto Zeitung readers, adding to its list of achievements since the revamped model was launched.

At the same time, a resounding vote of approval was given to the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing, resulting in both vehicles being awarded the coveted Auto Trophy.

Some 19 rivals fell on the wayside as the German carmaker stormed to the top in the 22nd annual vote, which drew the participation of more than 100,000 readers.

Commenting on the win, Mercedes' parent company Daimler said: "Since its market premiere in spring 2009, the new E-Class has successfully made a name for itself with its dynamic design, setting new standards in terms of safety, comfort, environmental compatibility and economy."

Elongating the length and width of the model was among the tweaks carried out to offer more room to passengers.
